KUCHING, April 4: Slated to commence this year, the RM55 million Lebuk Melanau project is set for completion by 2027, envisioned as a hub for cultural exchange, community activities, and unity among the Melanau and Malay communities.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said the project will move forward following approval from the State Planning Authority (SPA), with documentation and site works to begin shortly.

“The Lebuk Melanau will provide a platform for the Melanau and Malay communities to interact and conduct activities together,” he said after officiating the Sarawak Melanau Community Welfare Trust (LAKKMS) Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering at the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy (AKMAL) Sarawak Branch in Jalan Matang here today.

Len Talif added that Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to fund part of the development, which will be located at Wisma Melanau near the Islamic Information Centre (IIC) Sarawak.

However, he cautioned that additional funding may be required if project costs escalate due to delays.

The Deputy Minister also confirmed that the existing main building at Wisma Melanau will be preserved for its historical significance, having been officiated by the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The new development will integrate the original structure while adding a hotel, serviced apartments, and commercial spaces.

Highlighting the broader impact of the project, Len Talif noted that the current LAKKMS board represents Melanau communities across Sarawak, strengthening unity and engagement.

He also welcomed the involvement of other groups, including the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), as a positive step toward fostering inter-ethnic ties.

He expressed gratitude to former leaders, including Datuk Aidan Wing and the late Datuk Polit Hamzah, for their contributions to the Melanau community.

Also present were Deputy Premier in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol and LAKKMS chairman Datu Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood. — DayakDaily
