KUCHING, April 17: The RM876.2 million Special Aid Package unveiled by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg goes beyond mere handouts, serving as a strategic shield to protect Sarawakians while sustaining the growth momentum of the State’s local economy amid global uncertainties.

The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok applauded the Premier and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government for what he described as swift and decisive action in rolling out the package to cushion the impact of escalating global tensions, particularly the Iran conflict.

He said the decision to increase allocations under the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS), benefiting nearly 900,000 households, senior citizens and single individuals, reflects a deep understanding of ground sentiment.

“In a climate of rising energy and food input costs, this targeted intervention ensures that the most vulnerable segments of our society receive immediate relief where it matters most,” he said in a statement on Thursday (April 16).

Sim also commended the introduction of a 25 per cent discount on domestic electricity bills and a 50 per cent reduction in rent for hawkers and small businesses operating in government and government-linked company premises.

“These measures go beyond mere handouts; they are strategic economic stabilisers. By absorbing the shock of rising operational costs, the State government is protecting the growth momentum of Sarawak’s local economy and ensuring that our small traders remain resilient,” he stressed.

He added that the package underscores the caring approach of the Sarawak government, noting that even as the State advances major infrastructure and green energy initiatives such as the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (SARES) and toll-free bridge projects, attention remains firmly on the daily challenges faced by the people and business community.

Sim further noted that the Premier is closely monitoring rising costs in the construction sector, describing his commitment to act upon gathering more comprehensive data and feedback as a mark of prudent, evidence-based governance.

“In these challenging times, the Premier’s leadership provides both a safety net for today and a clear path for continued prosperity tomorrow. Sarawak is indeed in steady hands,” he said. — DayakDaily
