BINTULU (Oct 1): The Rotary Club of Bintulu Central (RCBC) and The Malaysian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Charities) donated essential medical and non-medical equipment worth RM431,260 to Kapit Hospital recently.
The donation of 160 different types of equipment seeks to provide more efficient and compassionate care to those in need.
Elder Larry Hathaway and Sister Yevette Hathaway represented LDS Charities, while RCBC was represented by its president Allen Wong.
According to a statement, this initiative titled ‘Hope Delivery: Touching More Lives’ underscores the organisations’ commitment to improving healthcare access and service in rural Sarawak.
Kapit Hospital director Dr Francis Lee highlighted that the division is the largest in Sarawak, and provides secondary medical services to approximately 135,800 individuals.
“Although the size of Kapit is slightly larger than that of the state of Pahang in Peninsular Malaysia, we are the only healthcare facility to provide in-patient and secondary medical services to the community,” he said.
He added that the hospital’s services expanded in 2012 by contracting their first in-house paediatrician.
Since then, Dr Lee said the hospital has a total of eight in-house speciality services, namely Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anesthetic & Intensive Care, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Radiology, and Psychiatry.
“Our aim is to have a total of 10 basic speciality services in the next one to two years’ time, so as to provide more holistic care to the people in the interior part of Sarawak.
“Additional medical and non-medical assets certainly enhance the care and comfort provided to the patients. With the Holter machine for example, we no longer need to send our patients away to Sibu Hospital, which is located about three hours away,” he said.
Meanwhile, Wong thanked LDS Charities and Kapit Hospital for their unwavering commitment to this cause.
“RCBC views this project as a testament to the power of compassion and partnership, reinforcing the belief that every person, no matter how remote, deserves quality healthcare.
“As we stand united in our mission to uplift and serve our communities, we look forward to continuing this journey of care and healing. Together, let’s create more magic and build a healthier future for Kapit and beyond,” he added.
