Gerawat lights the torch to declare open the SK Long Lellang Track and Field Championships on Friday.
MIRI (March 7): Children studying in rural areas have the same opportunity to pursue higher education, particularly now that the state government provides free tertiary education at Sarawak-owned institutions, said Datuk Gerawat Gala.
The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) said the Sarawak government remains committed to ensuring that children across the state have better access to education.
“This initiative is aimed at ensuring that Sarawakian children, including those from rural and interior areas such as Long Lellang, have equal opportunities to further their studies at university without being burdened by high tuition fees.
“This reflects the state government’s strong emphasis on human capital development, as we believe that the future of Sarawak lies in the hands of today’s younger generation,” he said when officiating at the SK Long Lellang Track and Field Championships on Friday.
As such, Gerawat, who is also Mulu assemblyman, encouraged rural students to chase greater heights as they excel in their respective fields.
“I am confident that one day we will see outstanding students in both academics and sports emerge from SK Long Lellang,” he said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the championship, he said sporting events are not merely an annual school activity, but also serve as an important platform to instil character, discipline and teamwork among students.
He pointed out that through sports, pupils learn the value of effort, sportsmanship and perseverance, as well as the importance of working as a team.
“Winning or losing is part of any competition. What matters most is the courage to try, the spirit to strive and the determination to continuously improve oneself,” he said.
