S’wak agrees in principle to establish Greater Miri Development Agency, says Premier Abang Johari

MIRI, Sept 13: A Greater Miri Development Agency could be established to drive development beyond the city, following Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s agreement in principle to a model similar to the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

According to him, the proposed agency would cover Miri’s outskirts including Lambir and Bekenu, while some interior areas would come under the Northern Development Agency (NEDA).

Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Sarawak special convention in Miri today, Abang Johari said the proposal was put forward by the PBB Miri leadership to coordinate development beyond Miri’s urban area.

“Similarly, in Serian and its surrounding areas, we have the GKCDA. So perhaps we can establish a Greater Miri Development Agency for this area,” he said.

He said the approach would mirror the development coordination model used in Greater Kuching.

Abang Johari also highlighted ongoing development in northern Sarawak, including new bridges and infrastructure in Miri, Limbang and Lawas.

In Miri, he pointed to a new bridge linking the Pulau Melayu area near the golf course to Marina while in Limbang, he highlighted the waterfront and a new bridge linking the town to the opposite bank.

Abang Johari also cited the Merapok New Township and the Yayasan Sarawak International School as examples of development aimed at creating new opportunities for local communities.

He added such efforts were part of Sarawak’s broader push to develop the state beyond major urban centres and prepare it for growth beyond 2030. — DayakDaily
