KUCHING (Oct 25): There is still a lack of awareness among local industries, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on occupational safety and health (OSH) regulations, said National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) Sarawak chairman Daren Ling.

In a statement yesterday, he said many organisations were unaware of the regulations that could affect them.

In view of this, he said YPNM Sarawak is committed to collaborate with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to increase public awareness of OSH, safeguard the rights of employees, as well as to clarify employers’ responsibilities in Sarawak.

Ling recently led some members from YPNM Sarawak to pay a courtesy call on DOSH Sarawak here to explore collaboration opportunities aimed at enhancing occupational safety and health in the region.

Also present were YPNM Sarawak secretary Jimmy Ling, YPNM Sibu deputy chairman Dr Ling Yee Soon, and YPNM Kuching secretary Winston Chang.

The meeting was chaired by DOSH Sarawak director Jamadi Yusup who highlighted the recent amendments of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 2022, which took effect on June 1 this year.

He said these amendments introduced stricter penalties for non-compliance, including fines of up to RM 500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years.

“The updated Act has broadened its scope to cover all economic sectors, requiring workplaces with five or more employees to appoint an OSH coordinator.

“Non-compliance can result in fines of up to RM 50,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of six months,” he said.

Ling in the meeting also suggested that DOSH collaborate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote OSH practices across various sectors, stressing the need for increased community awareness.

Meanwhile, Jimmy emphasised on the importance of establishing a streamlined process for reporting safety, health, and welfare concerns in the workplace.

He proposed a digital, instantaneous system that would facilitate immediate reporting to DOSH, effectively serving as a liaison for the agency.

YPNM is dedicated to offering Occupational Safety and Health Coordinator (OSH-C) Training programmes across Sarawak to improve employer awareness and safeguard consumer rights.

The awareness on OSH and OSH-C courses will be held periodically, helping participants stay informed about the latest regulations and responsibilities.

This initiative is crucial for fostering a safer working environment for all employees in Sarawak and ensuring that employers meet their legal obligations.

A safe and healthy workplace or environment is a fundamental right for consumers.
