KUCHING (July 10): The Sarawak Royal Malaysians Customs Department (JKDM) has achieved its largest drug seizure so far this year, confiscating drugs worth over RM1.9 million at a courier company here on July 4.

JKDM Sarawak director Norizan Yahya said two male suspects aged 19 and 24, who worked for a logistics company, were arrested during the operation.

“Based on intelligence we have gathered, we sprang into action around 3.50pm on July 4, conducting checks on a bonded truck,” said Norizan to a press conference held at their headquarters today.

He added that the inspection revealed ten large boxes inside the truck, containing 60 packets of crystal-like substances believed to be drugs that was disguised as ‘Guan Yi Wang’ tea.

Norizan said laboratory tests conducted on these packets weighing 60,670 grammes, which were labelled as ‘222’ and ‘AAA’, confirmed that they contained methamphetamine or syabu.

“We have determined that the seized drugs are able to cater to at least 300,000 users,” he added.

The team also impounded the bonded truck that was used by the suspects.

“On July 7, the suspects were remanded for four days at the Kuching Magistrates Court for investigation under Section 31B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” said Norizan.

He said the department is actively investigating the syndicate’s network and to determine the origin of the drugs, which were sent to Sarawak from Kuala Lumpur.

Norizan said the drugs were found packed together with home electrical appliances to confuse the authorities.

Given the substantial quantity of drugs that were seized during the operation, Norizan believed that there might be more syndicate members who are still at large.

“However, we are optimistic that we will get to the bottom of this case,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Individuals with any information on drug-related crimes are advised to contact the department at 1-800-88-8855 or visit their nearest branch office.
