KUCHING, May 6: The Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) has proposed a “Share-the-Road” campaign in tribute to the late veteran cyclist Ken Yeo, following the recent fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed his life.
SCA president Irawan Sudarsono said the association is seeking to collaborate on organising a car-free day or car-free morning initiative to promote road safety awareness among all road users.
“We are proposing to collaborate on a car-free day or car-free morning to carry out a ‘Share-the-Road’ campaign in tribute to Ken Yeo.
“This is to raise awareness among all road users that cyclists are also on the road, and to ensure they are given sufficient space and respect, while promoting road safety for both motorists and cyclists.
“Insha’Allah, we will submit the proposal soon and hope to implement it by next weekend,” he told reporters after a press conference by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on the Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge 2026 (SIMBC 2026) at Baitulmakmur Building II in Petra Jaya today.
The proposal comes after a 19-year-old suspect surrendered to police yesterday over an alleged hit-and-run incident along Jalan Stutong on May 1, which resulted in the death of a 56-year-old cyclist.
Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said the case has reached a form of closure following the suspect’s surrender and subsequent charge in the Kuching Magistrate’s Court today.
He described the incident as deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking for the victim’s family, noting that accidents can still occur despite precautions taken by road users.
“Let the police do the investigation and whatever judgment to be imposed by the court, we will take it as it is,” he said.
Abdul Karim also reminded cyclists to prioritise safety by ensuring their bicycles are properly equipped, particularly with lights and beacons, even during daytime rides.
“Make sure there are sufficient lightings, signal lights, beacons, to show that you are also one of the users of the road,” he said.
He further encouraged parents not to discourage cycling, but instead to promote it as a healthy activity while ensuring proper safety measures are observed. — DayakDaily
