KUCHING (Feb 4): A total of RM4,627,000 has been distributed to 1,688 mosques, surau and Islamic cemeteries across Sarawak for the year 2026 / 1447H.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the assistance was channelled through the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) and implemented based on a clear legal framework.

“The channeling of this contribution is not merely symbolic, but is carried out based on trust and a clear legal foundation.

“It is in line with Section 46 of the Sarawak Islamic Council Ordinance 2001, which provides for Baitulmal funds to be used to establish and maintain places of worship as well as Islamic burial grounds,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman made these remarks during the Sarawak Islamic Council Contribution Ceremony to Mosques, Surau & Islamic Cemeteries 2026M/1447H at the Sarawak Islamic Complex here.

He said the initiative reflected the role of MIS as the main Islamic affairs institution in ensuring the welfare of the ummah (community) is safeguarded in an organised, integrity-driven and effective manner.

Under the approved rates, Grade I Mosques (Division level) receive RM1,000, Grade II Mosques (District) RM2,000, Grade III Mosques (Sub-district) RM3,000 and Grade IV Mosques (Kariah/Public) RM5,000.

Mosques without schemes and public surau receive RM3,000, while mosques and surau within premises receive RM1,000.

Islamic cemetery management committees (JKTP) receive RM3,000, while Islamic cemeteries managed by land authorities receive RM1,000.

He said the allocations demonstrated the extensive and comprehensive coverage of assistance, encompassing almost the entire ecosystem of mosque, surau and Islamic cemetery management in Sarawak.

Dr Abdul Rahman also reminded mosque, surau and cemetery committees to manage the allocations responsibly.

“Every allocation channelled must be managed transparently, with accountability and in accordance with the guidelines set by the Sarawak Islamic Council, so that its benefits can be enjoyed by the ummah on a long-term basis,” he added.
