KUCHING, July 8: Sarawak has introduced a new academic course—Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering (Honours), at Curtin University Malaysia located in Miri.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the newly introduced course may be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and arguably in the whole of Asia.
He also said the new course will teach students about eight or nine types of energy, tailored to meet the growing demands of the energy sector in Malaysia and globally.
“This year will be the first intake involving up to 50 students, and all of them will be Sarawakians.
“The course will take about four years,” he said during a ‘Bual Bicara Juh Randau’ interview with Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) broadcast on Facebook on July 6.
In a separate press release issued on Feb 19, Curtin Malaysia said that, with a strong foundation in fundamental engineering concepts acquired in their first year (Engineering Foundation Year, or EFY), students will undertake a comprehensive study of diverse aspects of energy engineering.
As they progress, they will have options to choose from various specialisations, including Energy Conversion Technologies, Low Carbon Transition, Subsurface Energy Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, and others.
Furthermore, in their final year, they will undertake a major research project and a team capstone design project.
With these specialisations, graduates can look forward to exciting careers as energy systems engineers, energy transition consultants, subsurface energy engineers, energy researchers, energy conversion consultants, researchers and academics in relevant fields, and more.
Intakes for the programme are in February and July each year. Applications for the July intake are now open.
