KUCHING, Apr 21: Sarawak will accept any final decision regarding the proposed postponement of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, as uncertainty surrounds whether the event will proceed as scheduled in August following reports of a possible delay linked to the situation in the Middle East.

Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he had only recently received information indicating that the Games may be postponed rather than cancelled. However, he stressed that there has been no official confirmation from the Selangor government or relevant authorities.

“I was informed that the Sultan of Selangor has suggested SUKMA be postponed until the crisis in the Middle East is over,” he told reporters after the launch of the Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum here on Monday (Apr 20).

He emphasised that the matter remains unverified and is currently based on reports circulating in both mainstream and social media.

Despite the uncertainty, Abdul Karim said Sarawak would respect whatever decision is made by the Selangor government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Council.

“If Selangor decides not to proceed with SUKMA as planned, we will accept it,” he said.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Sarawak has already committed significant resources in preparation for the Games, including athlete training programmes and logistical planning for its contingent.

He added that preparations have also involved early coordination for accommodation, given that competition venues are spread across multiple districts in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, necessitating advance arrangements for lodging and facilities.

“It is quite disappointing if it is postponed. I feel sad as well. But ultimately, it is for the relevant authorities to decide,” he said.

For now, Sarawak will await an official announcement before making any further adjustments to its preparations. — DayakDaily
