S’wak urges digital push to preserve Bisaya, lesser-known ethnic heritage

KUCHING, Sept 20: Sarawak is looking to strengthen efforts to document Bisaya culture and other lesser-represented ethnic heritage, while encouraging younger generations to use digital platforms to promote their traditions.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Bisaya cultural heritage should not only be viewed as a legacy of past generations but also as an important asset for future generations.

His speech was delivered by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the Badudun Badapun 2026 event at the UNIFOR Complex here on Saturday (Sept 19).

“The Bisaya heritage including its dances, music, traditional attire, food, language, customs and traditions forms part of the cultural wealth that makes Sarawak unique.

“In this regard, I want to see young people play a greater role. Use social media, digital technology and new creativity to introduce Bisaya culture to the world.

“We want our culture to continue to live, grow and remain relevant without losing its original values and identity,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said he had directed the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC) to look into efforts to document the state’s various ethnic groups, including their dances, way of life, culture and heritage.

He said greater efforts were needed to showcase communities such as the Bisaya, Lun Bawang, Kedayan and Jati Miriek which received less exposure compared with some of Sarawak’s more frequently featured ethnic cultures.

“If this is not pursued, their culture and arts could eventually disappear. That is why this needs to be balanced,” he added.

He also highlighted the Borneo Cultures Museum as an important platform for showcasing the cultures of Sarawak’s various ethnic groups to the public and tourists.

He said the Sarawak Bisaya Association also had an important role as a bridge between generations, not only as a community organisation but also as a platform for developing talent, leadership, entrepreneurship and professional networks among the Bisaya community.

He hoped Badudun Badapun could continue as an annual event with more diverse and engaging activities, including opportunities to showcase Bisaya talent, highlight local entrepreneurs and strengthen ties between generations.

Meanwhile, a RM50,000 Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation to the Persatuan Bisaya Sarawak Cawangan Bandar Kuching was announced to support more activities over the coming year. — DayakDaily
