TUARAN (March 12): The Sabah government aims to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and transition towards a more diversified, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the move is in line with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), which serves as a strategic compass in planning Sabah’s energy future in a holistic manner.
“Through the expansion of renewable energy such as solar and hydro, we are not only balancing the state’s energy mix but also building stronger resilience to face global challenges and the climate crisis.
“This effort is an investment to ensure Sabah remains green and prosperous for decades to come,” he said at the launch of the 15-megawatt (MW) Large Scale Solar project in Tuaran and the Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) Ramadan iftar event at the Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik here.
Hajiji said the launch of the 15MW Large Scale Solar project reflects the strong synergy between government-linked companies (GLCs), particularly SEC, and the state government’s policy vision.
He commended SEC for undertaking its second solar project following the 5MW facility in Labuan, which he said demonstrated the corporation’s credibility as well as its technical and commercial capability in leading the renewable energy sector.
“The solar project will not only add 15MW to the state’s energy capacity but also carries greater significance in transforming Sabah’s overall energy structure,” he said.
Hajiji said about 150 workers, including local manpower, would be directly involved during the construction phase of the project.
“This provides an excellent platform for our local workforce to gain industry exposure and acquire skills through technology transfer in renewable energy.
“More importantly, once fully operational, the project is expected to create about 50 new jobs in operations, maintenance, technical services and administrative support,” he said.
He added that the initiative would not only help raise household incomes but also strengthen Sabah’s green energy ecosystem.
“This reflects the essence of development under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 roadmap, development that goes beyond numbers, but one that generates employment opportunities, enhances the skills of our people and delivers direct economic spillover to local communities,” he said.
Hajiji said the project also sends a clear signal that Sabah is committed to strengthening the state’s energy security.
He stressed that Sabah must not be left behind in the global transition and must ensure that economic development progresses hand in hand with environmental conservation for the well-being of future generations.
“The state government remains committed to advancing Sabah’s development agenda under the SMJ 2.0 framework, and in realising this larger vision, the energy sector stands as one of the most critical pillars,” he said.
