Chan says the Sabah government’s early move reflects a strong commitment to addressing long-standing energy security challenges, particularly in improving the stability and reliability of the Sabah Southern Grid for both consumers and industry.
KOTA KINABALU (Jan 24): The National Consumers’ Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah has expressed appreciation to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor for the state government’s proactive initiative in launching and driving the Sabah–Sarawak power interconnection project to strengthen Sabah’s electricity supply system.
YPNM Sabah chairman David Chan said the state government’s early move reflects a strong commitment to addressing long-standing energy security challenges, particularly in improving the stability and reliability of the Sabah Southern Grid for both consumers and industry.
He also extended his gratitude to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Datuk Abang Openg for the goodwill and cooperation shown by the Sarawak government in supplying 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the Sarawak grid through the interconnection.
“This support plays a crucial role in strengthening the overall stability of Sabah’s electricity supply system,” said Chan.
Beyond strengthening electricity supply, the interconnection is seen as a strategic step in enhancing collaboration between Sabah and Sarawak, fostering closer social ties, expanding economic integration and supporting joint development between the two Borneo states.
Chan said he was confident that the success of this cooperation would pave the way for more comprehensive collaboration between the Sabah and Sarawak governments, particularly in energy, renewable energy development and the oil and gas sector, to benefit citizens in both states over the long term.
He also acknowledged the efforts of Sabah Electricity CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob and his planning and technical teams for their professionalism, planning and teamwork in coordinating with Sarawak Energy to ensure smooth implementation of the interconnection initiative.
“The initiative sets a positive example of how inter-state cooperation can deliver tangible benefits to consumers, enhance regional energy security, and support sustainable development in East Malaysia,” Chan said.
