KUCHING (Feb 14): Festive cheer filled the wards of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) today as the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Batu Lintang branch paid a Lunar New Year visit to patients and healthcare workers.
Members of the organisation handed out festive gifts, namely mandarin oranges and ‘angpows’ (red packets), to about 800 patients placed on the hospital’s eighth and ninth floors, as well as young patients in the children’s ward and staff members.
Leading the visit were Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How and Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Kho Teck Wan.
Speaking to reporters during the visit, See said the annual initiative has been carried out for more than a decade, reflecting Saberkas’ commitment to remembering those unable to celebrate the festival at home.
“Every year, Saberkas distributes New Year oranges and gifts to patients and staff who continue serving during the festive season.
“This has been going on for more than 10 years, and it is something very meaningful,” he said.

He added that the purpose of the visit was to let patients and healthcare workers know they are not forgotten while others celebrate.
“We want them to know that we remember them and wish them well, especially the patients, that they will recover soon,” he said.
See also expressed appreciation to doctors, nurses and hospital staff who sacrificed their holidays to remain on duty.
“They forgo their celebrations to continue serving the hospital.
“Their dedication is very important, and we are grateful for their commitment,” he said, adding that SGH’s medical personnel are among the best in the country.
Also present was Saberkas Batu Lintang chairman Patrick Tan.
