KUCHING (Feb 10): The Sarawak United National Youth Movement’s (Saberkas) Women Affairs’ Bureau brought festive cheer to residents of Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching by distributing food items, toiletries, diapers and other essentials, including Mandarin oranges, ahead of this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

Led by bureau chairperson Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, the event, themed ‘Ziarah Kasih’, is part of the bureau’s ongoing social responsibility efforts to support vulnerable communities, particularly senior citizens.

Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching currently houses 83 elderly residents, with ages ranging from 65 to 98, and will temporarily accommodate 17 more residents from the Sibu branch next year during renovations.

Sharifah Hasidah, who is Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State Federal Relations), said the initiative is a way to share joy, show care, and foster closer ties with the community.

“Our presence today is not only to extend contributions but, more importantly, to convey appreciation and affection to the residents.

“Senior citizens are a valuable asset to society, and it is our responsibility to ensure they are cared for and appreciated,” she said.

The Semariang assemblywoman also highlighted the Sarawak government’s commitment to providing senior citizens with easy access to healthcare and social services, in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which emphasises social inclusivity and allocates substantial funding for such programmes.

Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching principal Dayang Siti Nurshamira Awang Talip was also present to witness the contributions.

Sharifah Hasidah expressed gratitude to all involved in making the visit a success and hoped the initiative would inspire younger generations to embrace the values of compassion and care, while wishing the residents health, peace, and happiness.
