DARO, May 9: Immediate and comprehensive inspections of electrical wiring and piping systems, particularly in older school buildings that are more prone to obsolete infrastructure, must be urgently prioritised, as the safety of students, educators and educational institutions cannot be compromised on cost considerations.
Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad said the electrocution incident that claimed the life of a Form Four student at a secondary school in Daro should serve as a grave reminder for all parties to reassess and strengthen safety standards in schools.
“We are deeply saddened and grieved by this incident, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family. No one wants such a tragedy to occur.
“However, following this incident, we must reflect and identify concrete steps to ensure it does not happen again,” he said when commenting on the case as per Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news today.
Safiee noted that a thorough investigation is expected to be carried out by the Ministry of Education (MOE) together with relevant agencies to determine the actual cause of the incident.
Among the immediate priorities, he stressed, is a full-scale inspection of the school’s electrical wiring system, including the possibility of infrastructure renewal in view of the age and long-term usage of the buildings.
He also highlighted the need to examine any additional or modified wiring that may have been installed without proper safety compliance or by individuals lacking the necessary technical expertise and qualifications.
“This tragedy must become a turning point for a more comprehensive review of electrical safety standards, not only in this school but in all schools nationwide,” he said.
Safiee further cautioned that wooden-structured schools and ageing buildings carry a higher risk of deteriorating or outdated wiring systems. As such, he emphasised that safety considerations must never be compromised due to budget constraints.
Beyond electrical systems, he also proposed that other essential infrastructure, including school piping systems, be reviewed with consideration given to safer materials to minimise risks such as electrical conductivity.
He added that safety education and emergency response training should be strengthened among students, particularly those in hostels, including proper guidance on how to respond and assist in electrocution emergencies.
At the same time, Safiee expressed hope that counselling support would be provided to the victim’s family, as well as to students and school staff affected by the tragedy. — DayakDaily
