KUCHING (Feb 5): Sarawak is placing talent at the centre of its semiconductor ambitions as it accelerates efforts to build a strong and sustainable ecosystem for the high-value industry.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap would only succeed with a deliberate and structured approach to developing the skilled workforce needed to power it.
“We are here because Sarawak has taken a clear position to develop a strong and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem, and that ambition must be underpinned by the right talent, the right institutions and the right partners,” he said, highlighting the significance of the collaboration with the University of Bristol through the programme.
His speech was read by his deputy minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis at the launch of the SMD Semiconductor Engagement with Higher Learning, Technical Institutions and Government Agencies, held in collaboration with the University of Bristol at SMD Academy here on Thursday.
Sagah noted that the state government has set a clear target of creating a new generation of semiconductor professionals by 2030 to meet both local and global demand.
“One of the key pillars of this effort is the Centexs–SMD Semiconductor Mastery Programme, which delivers specialised and intensive training to prepare talent for real-world semiconductor roles, particularly in high-value areas such as IC design,” he said, adding that the initiative is complemented by targeted state scholarships, sponsorships and related support programmes.
Through these initiatives, he said students with potential are able to pursue advanced studies aligned with industry demand, while public investment in education directly supports the state’s long-term economic and technology priorities.
Additionally, Sagah said Sarawak is also exploring opportunities in other high-technology sectors, including aerospace.
“Through our institutions and skills-focused platforms, and in collaboration with industry partners, we are developing aerospace-related education, training and industry exposure,” he said.
The minister stressed that this reflects Sarawak’s broader strategy to diversify and strengthen its advanced technology ecosystem, while building transferable engineering and technical capabilities that support multiple high-value industries.
Sagah also commended SMD Semiconductor for its efforts and contributions towards developing the state’s semiconductor industry.
“Ultimately, our objective is straightforward: to ensure that Sarawak’s semiconductor growth is driven by Sarawakian talent and supported by strong global partnerships,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Attorney-General of Sarawak and SMD Semiconductor board member Datu John Wayne Chamberline Sirau; SMD Semiconductor chief executive officer Shariman Jamil; and University of Bristol academic director and Rewire project lead Prof Martin Kuball.
