ADVERTISE HERE

Sii transformed the festive gathering into a moment of cultural reflection.
SIBU (Feb 19): The rhythmic plucking of the sape did more than entertain guests at the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Chinese New Year open house at Pulau Li Hua here yesterday — it told a story of devotion, craftsmanship and a lifelong musical calling.
At the centre of that story was 68-year-old Sii Tai Hing from Kanowit, whose performance transformed the festive gathering into a moment of cultural reflection.
Invited by the Persatuan Veteran Amor Sarawak, Sii brought not just an instrument, but a deeply personal creation — a sape he carved and crafted himself.
“The sape carries feeling. When I play, I want people to feel calm, to remember who we are,” he said after his performance.
Each note resonated with intention, a quiet reminder of Sarawak’s indigenous heritage amid the lively open house atmosphere.
Making his own instrument, he explained, is part of that purpose. From selecting the right timber to carving the hollow body and carefully tuning the strings, the process is as meaningful as the performance itself.
“When you build it, you understand its voice. You don’t just play the sape, you speak through it,” he added.
Originally inspired by elders in his Kanowit community, Sii has spent decades nurturing his musical journey.
Today, his mission is clear: to keep the sound of the sape alive for future generations.
At an age when many slow down, he continues to perform at cultural events, driven by the simple but powerful motive of ensuring Sarawak’s timeless melodies are not lost amid the noise of modern life.
