KUCHING: Sarawak's newly launched 99m tall flagpole has made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the tallest one in the country and Southeast Asia.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received the record certificate during a walkabout at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi, the flagpole site, here on Monday (Jan 1).
"This is an iconic project for Kuching and Sarawak.
"Tourists can visit the square, which is in a strategic and historic location near Fort Margherita and the Sarawak Legislative Assembly," he told reporters after the walkabout.
The RM30mil flagpole was officially launched during the New Year countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront on Sunday (Dec 31).
Abang Johari said it was funded by Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), PETRONAS and Shell to reflect the development of the oil and gas industry in the state.
He said it was also part of the state's tourism infrastructure, with amenities including an English tea house.
"It will have an impact as a place where visitors can take photos and learn about Sarawak's economic development and history," he said.
On the flagpole's height, Abang Johari said it was inspired by the nine-pillar design of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly building and the nine-pointed star on the state flag.
"If you include the foundation of the flagpole, the total height would come to 101m," he said.
