KUCHING: Sarawak’s young athletes must gain more exposure through competitions to build self-confidence and aspire to become champions on the international stage.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that while local athletes have immense talent, they need to participate in more events to be on par with world-class competitors.

“Our athletes are talented, but they need exposure in competitions to excel at higher levels—not just as village champions.

“They should aspire to be world champions like Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and Pandelela Rinong Pamg, who have made Malaysia and Sarawak proud on the international stage.

“Sarawak has the talent; we just need to give them the platform to build their confidence.

“Without self-confidence, no matter how much talent you have, you will always feel you are not up to the world’s standards,” he said during the Sarawak Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 Contingent incentive presentation at Riverside Majestic Hotel last night (Sept 14).

Abang Johari pointed out that it is important to have self-confidence as talent alone is insufficient without the belief in one’s ability to compete globally.

He also compared the importance of self-confidence in athletes to Sarawak’s pioneering efforts in the hydrogen and green energy sectors, where the state has gained recognition on the global stage.

Reflecting on Sarawak’s victory at SUKMA 2024, he expressed his gratitude and congratulations to the athletes and officials for their hard work in securing the overall championship title.

“The next challenge is SUKMA 2026 in Selangor. I hope and pray we will be able to retain our championship title there,” he said.
