KUCHING (Jan 18): The Sarawak Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society handed out food packages to 100 underprivileged households and individuals in conjunction with this year’s Spring Festival.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who officiated the event, lauded the society for spreading cheer and joy to the needy ahead of the festive season.
“The Spring Festival symbolises the beginning of a new lunar year. Giving out donations is not only charitable, but offers warmth particularly to those who need it most,” he said.
Wee said the event should be a reminder of the importance of showing care and compassion to others, especially the less fortunate.
“To a certain extent, this enables the recipients to feel like they were not left behind in society. Every donation represents the most resilient strength of society, and truly reflects the meaning of ‘Happy New Year’,” he said.
He noted the Society had persevered in helping and caring for the underprivileged over the years, and hoped the younger generation would emulate their noble gesture of maintaining Kuching as a caring community.
“The foundation of a civilised city does not lie in the existence of skyscrapers and advanced infrastructure or facilities, but the prevalence of a caring attitude among its people.
“A truly advanced city is a place where those from the upper class and the ability will give a hand to those who need it, regardless of race, faith or age,” he said.
Wee also called upon the government, community-based organisations and charitable bodies to work closely in providing assistance to those in need.
