KUCHING (Aug 12): A Sarawak government delegation led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has visited Penrose Plantation Forest in Canberra, Australia on Sunday (Aug 11) to foster international collaboration in sustainable forest management and environmental conservation through exchanging knowledge and best practices.
A press release issued by Awang Tengah’s office said Penrose Plantation Forest, located in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, is renowned for its expansive and well-managed pine plantations.
Covering over 1,000ha, Penrose Plantation Forest is a pivotal site for research, recreation, and sustainable timber production.
Managed by Forestry Corporation of New South Wales, it is a model of modern forestry practices, balancing ecological preservation with commercial forestry operations.
Awang Tengah and the delegation engaged in a comprehensive tour of the forest led by New South Wales Forestry Corporation officials, who highlighted Penrose Plantation’s innovative approaches to sustainable forest management including community engagement and recreation.
The press release said Penrose Plantation Forest is not only a site for timber production but also a valued recreational area for the local community.
The Sarawak delegation explored the forest’s recreational facilities, including walking trails, picnic areas, and educational programmes designed to foster community involvement in forestry conservation.
“This is pivotal to the policy in Sarawak, especially so, following the introduction of Amenity Forests through amendments to the Forests Ordinance in 2022.
“The Honourable Deputy Premier emphasised that Sarawak is committed to ensure sustainable supply of raw material for timber-based industry while continuing the initiatives in preservation of natural forests,” said the press release.
The press release said Penrose Plantation Forest is also a leader in sustainable timber production, employing advanced silvicultural techniques to ensure the health and productivity of the forest.
“The delegation observed the lifecycle of timber production, from planting to harvesting, and learned about the sustainable practices that minimise environmental impact,” said the press release.
Another innovative sustainable forest management approach by Penrose Plantation is in biodiversity conservation.
“The visit included a briefing on the forest’s biodiversity conservation efforts, showcasing how sustainable forestry can coexist with the preservation of natural habitats,” said the press release.
