KUCHING (April 1): Six exponents from Sarawak picked up one gold, two silver and three bronze medals as part of the national team at the World Junior Wushu Championships held in Tianjin, China.

The medals were won by the taolu athletes with three of them stepping onto the podium while the sole sanda competitor reached the quarter-finals.

Siblings Bryan and Crystal Wee led the charge with Crystal emerging as the standout performer after clinching one gold and one silver medal. Bryan contributed one silver and two bronze medals. The third bronze was won by Darren Hiing Chee Yik in the Boys C nandao.

“This is the best result ever from Sarawak at the World Junior level. It clearly shows that we are improving,” Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) president Allen Wong Siew Poh told the Borneo Post after welcoming the athletes upon their arrival at the Kuching International Airport on Wednesday.

Also present were WFS deputy president James Ting Ing Seek, Sarawak Sukma XXII head coach Yoong Thong Foong and state coach Lau Hui Wei.

Wong also expressed pride that the Sarawak team had contributed greatly to Malaysia’s tally of four gold, six silver and five bronze medals for an overall sixth placing.

The six-day meet had attracted 1,179 participants including athletes, coaches and officials from 78 countries.
