KUCHING: The Sarawak government is ramping up its preparedness to ensure that its people continue to enjoy sufficient and clean water supplies, following predictions that nearly two-thirds of the world’s population will face water stress by 2025.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi has acknowledged the impact of climate change on water supply, saying the ministry is proactively upgrading existing water treatment plants while building new facilities to enhance Sarawak’s water infrastructure.
“As we know, climate change is beyond our control, but we have treatment plants and are doing our best to provide sufficient water for the entire Sarawak,” he said.
He said this during the press conference for the upcoming Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2024 at Auditorium LCDA Tower here today (Oct 17).
He said that current initiatives by the Sarawak government to address this crisis include replacing old pipelines, upgrading water treatment plants, and constructing new ones, all aimed at ensuring water quality and quantity meet demand.
With Sarawak experiencing increasing demand for water, especially in new urban areas, Julaihi noted the importance of raising public awareness about water conservation.
“Although we are fortunate to have abundant water resources across Sarawak, it is crucial for people to understand that climate change could affect water availability in the future,” he said.
Julaihi also highlighted the significance of BIWWEC 2024 in addressing global water challenges and fostering sustainable solutions, particularly concerning clean water supply issues.
“That is why BIWWEC was established as a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange on these critical issues.
“In addition to outstanding speakers and sponsors, another highlight of BIWWEC 2024 is the exhibition, which will see over 60 participants showcasing the latest advancements in this sector.
“From advanced water treatment solutions to innovative wastewater recycling systems, these exhibitors represent the future of water management,” he said.
With the theme ‘Bridging Solutions for Water Sustainability’ and the slogan ‘Flowing Future,’ BIWWEC 2024, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from October 23 to 25, is expected to attract 1,000 delegates from Malaysia and around the world.
Also present at the press conference were Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and other distinguished guests.
