KUCHING, Sept 28: Sarawak is researching rice with lower starch content as it looks to develop its own locally produced brand for health-conscious consumers and potentially the global market.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the research was aimed at producing what he described as “healthy-friendly” rice with less starch.
Speaking at the opening of Sarawak Agrofest 2026 in Bintulu today, Abang Johari said the research was among the State’s efforts to develop new food products through science and innovation. The event was broadcast live by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) across its social media platforms.
He said the research was looking at rice with lower starch content from a health perspective, particularly in relation to carbohydrate and sugar intake.
“Because we are trying to produce healthy-friendly rice, rice that does not contain much starch. Our rice does not have too much starch,” he said.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Abang Johari said the research could eventually lead to Sarawak developing its own rice brand with potential demand beyond the domestic market.
“If this happens, we will have our own brand and I think the whole world would want this brand because diabetes is a disease with quite a high prevalence,” he said.
He said people were often advised by doctors to reduce their rice intake, but a rice variety within a lower-starch range could potentially provide an alternative for consumers concerned about carbohydrate intake.
“But if it is carbohydrates, if we have rice within that range, it means we can produce food that is suitable for health requirements,” he said.
Abang Johari said the development of such a product could give Sarawak an opportunity to move beyond producing agricultural commodities and instead create a value-added food product under its own brand. — DayakDaily
