KUCHING, May 20: Sarawak is exploring new hybrid rice varieties through the Rice Tasting programme, which utilises a Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) model as part of efforts to boost local rice production.
The rice tasting programme was officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg held in conjunction with the “Kempen Lebihkan Makanan Buah-Buahan Tempatan” (Eat More Local Fruits Campaign) at the foyer of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here today.
Among the rice varieties showcased for tasting were hybrid varieties from Green World Genetics, namely GWG A5, GWG PBRO, and GWG 3155; hybrid varieties from China, including GS30 and Honglian Louyou 8; as well as inbred varieties from Malaysia such as PUTRA 1 and MR297.
A variety of rice types showcased during the programme, highlighting both hybrid and traditional varieties. The programme aimed to introduce new rice varieties and assess consumer acceptance through tasting sessions, while also gathering feedback on the quality, texture, and taste of the rice produced.
According to a statement, through the introduction of the DBOT model, industry players are encouraged to carry out proof of concept (POC) in selected areas to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed rice varieties, technologies, and operational models before moving into the commercialisation stage.
Such POC planting is crucial in evaluating the feasibility of the technology, cultivation practices, and potential of the introduced rice varieties, ensuring they are capable of achieving high and sustainable productivity in Sarawak.
Local fruits showcased during the programme. The statement added that hybrid rice varieties have a high yield potential of between 10 to 12 metric tonnes per hectare, subject to adequate infrastructure, efficient paddy field management, and systematic planting practices.
In addition to modern varieties, the programme also featured Biris rice, a traditional Sarawak rice variety registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, recognised for its heritage value and strong local identity.
While Sarawak remains open to the development and cultivation of hybrid and perennial rice varieties to increase production, it remains committed to preserving, promoting, and strengthening high-value local rice varieties as part of the state’s agricultural heritage and a source of income for local communities.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak (M-FICORD), in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA), Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB), Sarawak Rubber Industry Board (SARIB), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Sago and Nipah Development Board (SNDB), Sarawak Farmers’ Organisation Authority (SFO), Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board, Cocoa Board, and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). — DayakDaily
