KUCHING, Nov 29: Sarawak is moving to harness sago by-products from rumbia trees to produce hydrogen and other clean energy sources as part of its long-term sustainability agenda, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.
Speaking at the launch of CENTEXS Dalat today, he said sago remains an underutilised economic resource, particularly the methane released during processing, which can be refined into hydrogen.
“Methane extracted from sago contains hydrogen that can be isolated and converted into clean energy, making it a viable feedstock for hydrogen production,” he said.
He added that Sarawak’s newly passed sustainability legislation, including waste-to-energy provisions, strengthens the State’s ability to commercialise biomass, biochar and other by-products from agricultural and forestry sectors.
According to him, Dalat’s expanding technical training ecosystem will help supply the workforce needed to advance hydrogen, biomass and biochar technologies, which he described as central to Sarawak’s future economy. — DayakDaily
