KUCHING (March 18): Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng was commended by the state government at its 70th anniversary celebration for its contributions to charity and its role in fostering civic awareness, unity and social harmony.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the organisation’s efforts align with Sarawak’s vision of inclusive and sustainable development, underscoring the importance of cooperation between civil society and the government.

“As we honour the contributions of our predecessors, let us also inspire the younger generation to carry forward the Association’s noble spirit, ensuring that its charitable mission continues for generations to come,” he said in his speech.

His speech was delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during the organisation’s anniversary dinner cum Chinese New Year 2026 celebration at a hotel here on Tuesday.

Abang Johari added that the organisation’s 70-year milestone is a testament to its steadfastness, built on the dedication of its pioneers and the unity of successive committees, making it a “source of pride” for the state.

He said that over the years, the organisation has not only united its members and strengthened organisational development, but also embraced charitable welfare at the heart of its mission — actively advancing social care, public service, and the establishment of homes for the elderly to provide shelter for those who are lonely and without support.

“Your continuous efforts have brought care and hope to the underprivileged, while fostering harmony, understanding, and goodwill among Sarawak’s diverse communities.

“This spirit truly reflects the values of coexistence, mutual respect and shared prosperity,” he remarked.

He further highlighted the organisation’s initiative in developing the new Song Dafeng Patriarch Temple and columbarium at the new site in Mile 10.

“This project represents the continuation of religious and cultural heritage, as well as a symbol of strong community unity,” he said.

Abang Johari added that the new temple will serve as a meaningful spiritual and cultural space for members and the public, while providing renewed momentum for charitable activities upon its completion.

Among those present were the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division president Dato Sri Richard Wee, Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng chairman Tay Boon Sin, China’s Consul-General in Kuching Xing Weiping and the event organising chairman Lau Soon Yiun.
