KUCHING, Jan 27: Sarawak is leveraging Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) as a practical entry point into the aerospace industry, while utilising aerospace and space technologies tailored to the State’s unique geographical features.

Speaking at the Asia Pacific Aerospace Conference and Exhibition (APACE) 2026, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said MRO offers a realistic pathway into the aerospace value chain by generating skilled employment, enhancing safety standards and building technical expertise within Sarawak.

“Alongside MRO, Sarawak is developing capabilities in avionics, advanced materials, digital maintenance systems and data-driven safety and asset management to create a sustainable and investable aerospace industry base,” he said in his speech at the event held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Abang Johari highlighted that aviation operations and airport infrastructure are being expanded to support broader aerospace activities, including manufacturing, technical services and industry support functions.

He added that Sarawak’s geography, which includes vast forests, river networks and a long coastline, provides ideal conditions for the application of aerospace and space technologies, particularly for monitoring and data collection.

“The State is already leveraging satellite data for forest and natural resource management, agriculture, land-use planning, disaster preparedness, and maritime and coastal monitoring,” he said.

The Premier stressed that Sarawak’s approach focuses on practical applications that deliver measurable outcomes rather than prestige-driven projects.

“The integration of MRO development with applied aerospace and space technologies will create jobs, enhance technical capacity and position Sarawak as a key player in the regional aerospace ecosystem,” he added. — DayakDaily
