KUCHING, May 4: The 50th Sarawak Open Men’s and Women’s and 5th Sarawak Veterans Mandarin Singing Competition has been hailed as a meaningful platform that fosters unity and harmony through music.
According to a press release, Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim said the three-day competition, held from May 1 to 3 at SJK Chung Hua Jernang in Samarahan, brought together participants from across Sarawak regardless of background, allowing them to build friendships while showcasing the State’s rich cultural diversity.
He also commended the organisers for maintaining consistently high standards in hosting the annual event, noting the strong quality of contestants from various divisions throughout Sarawak.
“I hope that the competition would continue to grow and gain wider exposure through mainstream and social media platforms, enabling more people to appreciate and support Sarawak’s local music industry,” he reportedly said.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Singing Association president Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the competition has evolved into one of the State’s most iconic Mandarin singing events since its inception in 1975.
Pang, who is also Tanjong Batu assemblyman, said the competition has witnessed the growth and transformation of countless singers over the past five decades while carrying the dreams and passion of generations of music lovers.
He added that the veterans category provides an important platform for experienced singers to continue pursuing their passion, exchange ideas and showcase their talents.
“All these achievements are inseparable from the collective efforts and unwavering support of the Sarawak Singing Association and music societies from various divisions over the years.
“The competition has successfully nurtured many outstanding talents and continues to inject vitality into Sarawak’s music culture,” he said.
Pang also encouraged contestants to give their best performances, build friendships through music, and improve through healthy competition while enjoying the joy of singing.
Permanent Honorary Advisor and organising chairman Dato Sim Kiang Chiok said this year’s edition marks a significant milestone in the event’s history, reflecting the association’s long-standing commitment to promoting music and nurturing local talents.
He said the competition goes beyond winning titles, serving as a platform to foster unity, mutual understanding and cultural exchange among participants from across Sarawak.
Datuk Sim added that the event provides contestants with opportunities to sharpen their singing techniques, gain valuable stage experience and enjoy the fulfilment that music brings.
He expressed confidence that the competition will continue to thrive and remain an important platform for discovering future singing talents in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
