MIRI (Sept 6): The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (Mysed), will be submitting a formal request to the federal government to assume responsibility for the repairing and upgrading works on the Miri Public Swimming Pool, said Datuk Sebastian Ting.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak pointed out that approval for the request is crucial to address the pool’s primary issue of a malfunctioning water pump, resulting in the water becoming filthy.

“The new water pump is costly and will be imported from overseas. Both the state and federal government have each contributed RM500,000, providing a total allocation of RM1 million for the repair project.

“While the funds are already in place, the project now hinges on the federal government’s approval to move forward with the much-needed upgrade,” the Piasau assemblyman said in a statement today, issued in connection with a recent site inspection of the public pool here.

He added that Miri City Council is expecting the works to be completed by Q1 2025.

Meanwhile, during the recent site inspection, Ting also checked on the progress of the works of the new roof over the pool’s main swimming area.

“I was told that the roof materials arrived today (Sept 6) and fabrication works will be carried out from Monday (Sept 9) onwards.

“The contractors responsible for the roof mentioned that they have all the permits in place, and once the roof project starts, it is expected to be completed by January 9 next year,” he said.

Moreover, Ting expressed his gratitude to the concerned member of public who raised the malfunctioning water pump issue and offered an apology for the delay, acknowledging that the problem persisted for over two years.
