KUCHING (Feb 28): After 16 years of service, Sarawak Mufti Datu Kipli Yassin will retire from leading the state’s fatwa institution.
Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), in its report, states that Kipli’s retirement takes effect today (Feb 28).
Speaking at a press conference after paying a courtesy call on the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here on Friday, Kipli described the meeting as ‘especially meaningful’ and ‘a gesture of appreciation’ for the trust and confidence that the state leadership had placed in him over the years.
“I am indebted for what has been given to and for the trust placed in me to lead the fatwa institution in particular, and Islamic institutions in Sarawak as a whole,” he said.
Kipli added that his 16 years as the state mufti had given him the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the realities of society in Sarawak in particular, and Malaysia in general.
He further emphasised the role of the fatwa institution as not merely to issue religious rulings for Muslims, but also to ensure that decisions made would not affect the sensitivities of non-Muslims in order to preserve harmony in the state.
“Although a fatwa is specifically for Muslims, we also take into account that what we issue should not hurt the feelings of non-Muslims.
“With that, our lives will always remain harmonious,” he added.
Throughout his tenure, Kipli also praised the support of the Sarawak government, which he said had strengthened the function of the fatwa institution, enabling it to operate more broadly, systematically and inclusively, including adapting to technological developments and greater social inclusivity.
When asked about his successor, he said that a candidate had been identified, but the official announcement would be made by the Sarawak government.
