KUCHING, April 16: The Sarawak government is prepared to step in with additional assistance if sectors such as construction and logistics are significantly affected by rising diesel prices linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is currently monitoring the situation closely, particularly in the construction sector, where contractors and transport operators are exposed to fuel cost fluctuations.

“We are observing the situation. If they are affected and there are signs they need assistance, we will consider it. We are already on standby,” he said when announcing additional measures under Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) during a press conference after chairing the State Cabinet Meeting at Satria Pertiwi Complex, which was broadcast live via TVS and Ukas channels, today.

Abang Johari noted that diesel price increases could impact vehicles such as lorries, buses and construction machinery, potentially impacting project delivery timelines and raising operating costs.

The State government, he said, may engage industry groups including Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS), Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and other chambers of commerce to assess ground conditions before introducing targeted support measures.

“At this time, there is no package yet, but we are engaging the chambers of commerce to understand the situation,” he added.

Abang Johari stressed that the immediate priority remains ensuring food security for the people, supported through increased cash assistance under SKAS and continued electricity subsidies to ease household burdens. — DayakDaily
