KUCHING, May 1: The Sarawak government is open to the possibility of developing dedicated futsal courts as interest in the sport continues to grow across the State.
Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said any such move would depend on public participation levels and budget availability.
He said the strong turnout at the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) President’s Cup Futsal Championship reflected the sport’s rising popularity.
“When a sport sees strong participation and public interest, we will always consider something like that.
“With the kind of interest shown in futsal today, I would not be surprised if we look into it. However, we still have to consider the budget,” he said after officiating the Saberkas President’s Cup Futsal Championship at Arena Sukan here today.
He added that similar growth trends had been observed in other sports, including pickleball, which has gained rapid popularity in Sarawak.
“I can see that Sarawak is among the places in Malaysia where pickleball has picked up very quickly,” he said.
Abdul Karim said the State had also previously supported sports such as Muay Thai, which were once less known but have since developed steadily with consistent backing.
“I still remember when Muay Thai was not well known, but with support from the State government and Sarawak Sports Corporation, we now have events like the Premier Cup and TYT’s Cup, and have produced a number of good athletes,” he added. — DayakDaily
