MIRI (Aug 23): Sarawak’s pencak silat team wrapped up their Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI outing with another two gold and six bronzes today, bringing their total medal count throughout the tournament to five gold and seven bronze.

Mohamad Nurhasri Maxzakir won the fourth gold in the Men Class E Category after beating Pahang’s Muhammad Raden Sarby Mohd Insan with points 60-58, while Ummi Mashitah Hassan won the fifth and final gold for the team in the Women Class B Category, after beating Kedah’s Nur Irhamna Qamariah Wira with points 39-24.

The bronzes were won by Arif Danish Amy Zahril Ramdzani in the Men’s Open 1 Category, Rusyaidi Fitri Nazir in the Men Class C Category, Siti Aizza Zahamary in the Women Class F Category, Nur Arieyana Yazmin Saupi in the Women Open 1 Category, Abdul Afiq Syamil Juwani in the Men Class F Category and Nursyuhada Mohamad in the Women Class E category.

On Tuesday, Ahmad Daniel Abdullah, Mohammad Nur Azlisham Mohd Ali and Suhaiqal Suhardie won gold in the Jurus Wajib (Regu) men category while Nuradriani Fitri Abdullah, Nur Alfianiz Jordan and Vivina Anging Johntan won gold in the same category for women. The third gold was contributed by Mohammad Shamiezal Shapian in the Men Creative Solo category and
Zureen Zulyka Zaidel won bronze in the Solo Baku (Tunggal) category.

The tournament from Aug 18 to 23 had its own controversy when it was halted halfway on Wednesday, after spectators threw a plastic bottle into the arena and a plastic cup into the technical area.

The acts were shows of protest for points irregularity on the scoreboard during a match in the women’s under 45kg category, between Sarawak and the Federal Territory.

This led to spectators and supporters being barred from the tournament on Thursday by the Sukma Pencak Silat Technical Committee.

However, the ban was lifted last night following a petition by the Rumpun Silat Sarawak, and the final matches today saw a stadium packed with spectators and supporters cheering on their respective team.
