KUCHING, June 11: Sarawak and Poland’s Wielkopolska region are exploring a strategic partnership in hydrogen technology and clean energy development following a high-level roundtable discussion held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday (June 10).
The 40-minute closed-door session brought together senior officials and energy experts from both regions, focusing on potential collaboration across hydrogen production, storage, distribution and end-use applications, including mobility and industrial heating.
Deputy Sarawak Secretary Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said the discussions reflected strong alignment between Sarawak’s green energy ambitions and Wielkopolska’s established hydrogen development framework.
“What strikes me is how much common ground there is. Both regions are navigating the energy transition, both have the ambition, and both are looking for the right partners to accelerate that journey together,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
The roundtable began with comparative presentations highlighting Sarawak’s large-scale hydrogen production goals alongside Wielkopolska’s regional hydrogen advancements.
A key focus of the discussion was identifying immediate areas for technical cooperation, particularly in strengthening the hydrogen value chain from production to application.
Sarawak also reportedly expressed strong interest in European regulatory and certification frameworks, which are seen as crucial as the State positions itself as a potential hydrogen exporter in the Asia-Pacific region.
The session also explored priority areas for collaboration, including policy and standards harmonisation, joint research and development (R&D), and potential commercial partnerships.
Recognising the importance of human capital development, both sides discussed institutional linkages between Polish research organisations and local universities, including Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Curtin University Malaysia and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.
The roundtable, which was coordinated in collaboration with the Polish Embassy, also marked progress towards the formulation of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both regions.
Officials said the proposed MoU would include clear deliverables and accountability mechanisms to ensure practical outcomes rather than remaining at a conceptual level.
Discussions also touched on linking Polish businesses and trade missions with investment and joint-venture opportunities in Sarawak’s emerging hydrogen ecosystem.
To sustain momentum, both sides agreed on plans for pilot projects, reciprocal visits, and deeper technical engagement through 2026.
A study visit for Sarawak officials to key hydrogen technology sites in Wielkopolska is also being planned, potentially in conjunction with Poland’s H2Poland forum.
The roundtable also explored the possibility of opening selected Sarawak datasets and project sites for collaborative pilot testing using Polish methodologies. — DayakDaily
