KUCHING (Sept 16): Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for urgent global cooperation to address climate change, warning that the world is nearing a critical point in rising temperatures.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Abang Johari highlighted the growing danger, noting that global temperatures are already 1.46 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with the threshold of 1.5 degrees fast approaching.
“If the temperature reaches 1.5 degrees Celsius, it will become a major problem for the whole world.
“You cannot predict the climate anymore. Even the monsoon season no longer follows its usual pattern,” he said when officiating at the closing ceremony of the 39th National Chinese Festival at Kuching Waterfront last night.
As part of Sarawak’s efforts to mitigate climate change, Abang Johari announced that the state is making significant strides in adopting green energy by transitioning to hydrogen-powered public transport to reduce carbon emissions.
He explained that this transition aims to cut emissions, with Sarawak producing hydrogen locally and collaborating with China on green energy technologies.
Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak is one of the cleanest cities in the world due to its low carbon emissions, highlighting the state’s leadership in green energy solutions and its role in addressing global climate challenges.
In addition to addressing climate change, Abang Johari highlighted the importance of inclusivity and international cooperation, stating that regardless of background or religious faith, everyone must work together towards the betterment of all members of society.
Also present at the closing ceremony were the Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, President of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Goh Tian Chuan, President of the Chinese Associations Sarawak Dato Richard Wee Liang Chiat and other distinguished guests.
