KUCHING (Aug 10): Kuching Coffee Week 2024 has paved the way for a vibrant expansion of the state’s coffee culture.
Malaysian Specialty Coffee Association (MSCA) president Kelvin Ngow expressed strong optimism about the development of Sarawak’s specialty coffee scene, noting a consistent rise in local interest over recent years.
“Without events like Kuching Coffee Week (KCW) 2024, progress would be slow. Therefore, MSCA supports this event to foster the growth of coffee consumption and appreciation in Sarawak,” he said.
He said this at the event’s launching at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Jalan Simpang Tiga here today.
Ngow highlighted that specialty coffee allows for a deeper appreciation of quality and craftsmanship compared to regular coffee.
He emphasised the vital role of baristas in connecting consumers to the entire coffee-making process and advocated for providing them with platforms to enhance their skills and advance Malaysia’s coffee culture.
KCW 2024 runs until tomorrow from 9am to 5pm at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
At the launching of the event today, participants had the opportunity to attend an introductory session on coffee, as well as a coffee tasting session led by Australian Brewers Cup Champion Tom Hutchins and his coach, Patrick Dann.
The session provided valuable insights into the nuances of coffee, including bean differentiation and the overall coffee-making process.
Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), the event’s closing ceremony tomorrow is expected to be attended by MTCP Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
