According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia and Singapore have reached a strong agreement on the energy transition agenda and electricity imports, including renewable energy to be supplied from Sarawak.

“There has been a consensus reached in this area. We want to ensure that Sarawak, which has surplus energy, can easily export and we can guarantee that the needs of Peninsular Malaysia are met as well as the needs of Singapore,” he said during a press conference at the 12th Malaysia-Singapore ALR in Singapore today.

The Prime Minister added that relevant agencies, particularly under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), will expedite the process.

Anwar also noted that both Malaysia and Singapore have reached an initial understanding on flight routes, covering Singapore and Malaysia’s routes to Sabah and Sarawak, with Malaysia emphasising balanced access.

“This includes flight routes for Singapore’s use as well as Malaysian flight routes, to the East, mainly Sabah and Sarawak, which are much larger.

“We have agreed that if the intention is to help coordinate and facilitate Singapore’s travel, we will also impose a condition to ensure that routes for flights from Malaysia or the Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah, Sarawak and the East are guaranteed to be accessible and unrestricted,” he said.

The retreat also witnessed Prime Ministers Anwar and Singapore’s Lawrence Wong witnessing the exchange of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) involving the home affairs, transport and health ministries of both countries.

Also present during the press conference were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke, Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Second Minister of Finance Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Menteri Besar of Johor Dato Onn Hafiz Ghazi. – DayakDaily
