KUCHING, April 2: Sarawak’s gastronomy takes the spotlight as Serumpun Sarawak elevates traditional dishes into fine dining, honouring culture while supporting sustainable practices.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Serumpun Sarawak initiative reflects the State’s unique cultural diversity, which forms the foundation of its food identity.
“This is a unique event that allows us to show the world the rich cultures of Sarawak’s many ethnic groups. Our food is equally diverse, a true melting pot of flavours and traditions. Through Serumpun, we can showcase these dishes locally and beyond,” he told reporters at the Serumpun Sarawak event held at Sarawak Cultural Village last night (Apr 1).
He also said Sarawak’s gastronomy is highly valuable and can gain global recognition through the expertise and connections of chefs like James Won.
Abdul Karim said that the State is also supporting culinary talents to gain international exposure as part of its broader tourism strategy.
“Food is a key tourism driver, and supporting talents overseas helps bring the State cuisine to international audiences,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said expansion of the programme is being considered as it continues to gain traction among various parties.
“Often, we overlook that our local foods are viewed as exotic by others, which is why internationally recognised celebrity chefs are needed to promote them,” he added.
Led by Chef James Won, Serumpun Sarawak transforms traditional dishes into a global culinary showcase rooted in storytelling and sustainability.
Among those present were Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Minister for Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chairman Dato Dennis Ngau, and STB chief executive officer Dr Sharzede Datu Askor. — DayakDaily
