KUCHING (Aug 21): Sarawak’s Ng Jing Xuan has ended her Malaysia Games (Sukma) campaigns on a high note after finally fulfilling her dream of breaking the Games’ record in the women’s javelin throw event finals this afternoon.

Ng threw a distance of 45.12 metres, shattering the 16-year-old record previously held by fellow Sarawakian Ho Sin Hui at 44.98 metres in Sukma 2008.

“Like I previously mentioned in my last Sukma outing, I aspired to break the record in this year’s edition of the Games and I have prepared so long for this competition,” said the 20-year-old.

Ng said this year would mark her last participation in Sukma after taking part in the previous editions in 2018 and 2022, and she hoped the younger athletes would give the javelin throw sport a try.

“Train hard, believe in your coach, follow the training programmes, as well as getting support and encouragement from your family, friends and the media,” she said when asked to share about her ‘recipe’ of success.

When asked about her next goal following her record-shattering achievement in Sukma, Ng said she aims to qualify for the Southeast (SEA) Games to be held in Thailand next year.

The wife of Yang Dipertua Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, personally presented the gold medal during the presentation ceremony at Sarawak Stadium today.

The silver and bronze medals went to Terengganu’s Noor Aliya Alias with a distance of 39.11 metres and Maryjane Juberin of Sabah with a distance of 39.01 metres.

Meanwhile, Sarawakians Clezendra Chanda Cevester Empari clinched the silver medal in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase with a time of 12:31.58 and fellow Sarawakian Faris Khuzairie Faizal took the third place in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase with a time of 10:05.52.
