KUCHING (Sept 21): Sarawak is set to establish its own airline by the end of this year, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The move, he said, is expected to significantly boost tourism and connectivity to the region.
“We need people to come, and for that, we need better access.
“By the end of this year, inshallah, we may have our own airline, which will bring tourists to Sarawak,” he said at the Night At The Museum event at the Borneo Cultures Museum here tonight.
In addition to launching the state-owned airline, Abang Johari also revealed plans for a new international airport that will accommodate up to 15 million passengers.
The airport is expected to feature state-of-the-art facilities and offer a seamless travel experience akin to major international hubs like Doha.
“The new airport will be modern, with seamless check-ins, allowing passengers to check in only once before boarding their flights.
“It will take at least three to five years to complete, but once operational, it will play a crucial role in attracting tourists and business travelers to Sarawak.”
He expressed optimism about the future, envisioning Sarawak as a central hub for both tourism and major events.
“With these developments, I hope Sarawak will not only become a popular tourist destination but also a key location for international business events.
“May our state prosper, and all these initiatives come to fruition,” he said.
Abang Johari also congratulated the Museum Department for their efforts in fostering networking not only among their staffs but also members of the public including other museums.
“We want the standard of museums in Sarawak to be at par with their counterparts internationally, and I am pleased that this museum is one of the best,” he said.
Also present were Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, and Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
