MIRI (Oct 30): The Sarawak Transport Ministry will be hosting the revived traffic game which has been rebranded as the ‘Sarawak Traffic Games’ starting this November 23.

“This will kick off a series of events held from November 2024 to November 2025 in other divisions (apart from Miri) including Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Sarikei, and Bintulu,” said State Deputy Transport Minister (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil in a press conference today.

He said the traffic games, formerly known as ‘Shell Traffic Games’ which was last held in 2015, aimed to enhance road safety education through a structured competition format.

“The annual event will begin at the inter-school level and progress to divisional competitions, culminating in a state-level road safety competition.

“Our Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, has emphasised the significance of this initiative in promoting road safety awareness among our youth,” he said.

According to Dr Jerip, to hold the traffic games, the ministry would be utilising existing traffic gardens in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Sarikei, which were specifically developed to facilitate traffic games.

“If we receive positive responses to these events, there may be opportunities for additional traffic gardens in other divisions,” he said.

He pointed out further that there were three main objectives of the Sarawak Traffic Games.

First, he said, is to enhance road safety awareness by educating primary and
secondary school students about essential traffic rules, road signs as well as
safe practices for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Second is to promote active participation through hands-on, interactive
simulations that encourage teamwork and critical thinking, while the third one is to instil long-term behaviour change, equipping participants with the skills to advocate for safety in their communities, he added.

“The primary coordinator for these traffic games will be the Ministry of Transport Sarawak, with the Resident Office acting as the divisional coordinator.

“We are committed to collaborating with various agencies and private
sector partners to ensure the success of this initiative,” he said.

Dr Jerip said, through these traffic games, the organiser can foster greater awareness and train young road users, ultimately contributing to safer road practices in Sarawak.

The inaugural Sarawak Traffic Games Miri Division would involve five secondary schools and five primary schools here.

They are SMK Chung Hua, SMK St Joseph, SMK St Columba, SMK Dato Permaisuri, SMK Lutong, SK Jalan Bintang, SK Sayed Othman, SK Miri, SJKC Chung Hua Miri and SJKC North.
