KUCHING, April 16: The Sarawak government will give a 50 per cent rental discount for small traders and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in premises owned by local authorities and State statutory bodies.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the discount will apply to markets and stalls owned by local authorities, as well as business premises owned by statutory bodies such as the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA).

The rental discount initiative involves an estimated financial implication of RM8.1 million.

“This is the financial implication we are providing to help our people. And this is an estimate, it may be more, depending on circumstances that may require additional support,” he said during a press conference after chairing the State Cabinet Meeting at the Satria Pertiwi Complex, which was broadcast live via TVS and UKAS channels today.

On questions regarding potential additional support for businesses affected by rising costs, particularly following previous assistance packages such as Bantuan Khas Sarawakku Sayang (BKSS), the Premier said the government has already included rental relief as a form of direct support to traders.

“If businesses are affected and demand declines, we will look into it. There may be other packages. At the moment, there is no data indicating such a situation,” he said.

However, he noted that the government is closely monitoring sectors such as construction, which may be affected by rising diesel costs.

“We are watching the situation, especially in the construction sector where contractors use diesel-powered vehicles and machinery. If there are signs of impact, we will consider further assistance,” he said.

He added that future engagement with business chambers such as the Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS), Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and other industry groups will ensure timely feedback and response.

Also present during the press conference were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, as well as Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
