MIRI (March 1): The Sarawak government is working closely with local authorities to ensure both urban and rural areas are equipped with age-friendly infrastructure, including safe, accessible and convenient public facilities that allow senior citizens to move about with confidence and comfort.

Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative reflected the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing and dignity of the elderly, in line with the people-centred development agenda championed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Our Premier has emphasised that longevity is not just a health achievement, but a shared responsibility to ensure senior citizens live fulfilling and meaningful lives,” he said at a Chinese New Year 2026 celebration organised by Senior Citizens Service Centre (PPWE) Miri here on Saturday.

He added that development must be inclusive so that every citizen, regardless of age, could enjoy dignity and opportunity.

“Our aspiration is not only for Sarawakians to live longer, but to live better,” he stressed.

Lee noted that the government had introduced various community-based initiatives, including the establishment of senior activity and service centres to promote social interaction, health support and self-development programmes.

“These centres provide spaces for our elderly to remain active and engaged in the community,” he said.

Describing senior citizens as the pillars of families and the foundation of society, Lee said the progress and vibrancy enjoyed by Miri today were built on their hard work and perseverance.

“A caring society is measured by how we treat our elders. Today’s celebration reflects the compassion and unity that define Miri,” he said.

Lee also urged the younger generation to uphold filial piety, reminding them that spending time with elders, listening to their stories and showing care are among the greatest gifts they can offer.

The gathering also held the presentation of special ‘angpows’ (red cash packets) to senior citizens aged 80 and above, as well as angpows distributed to other attendees.

The event additionally marked Lee’s birthday, which falls on the same day, with a cake-cutting ceremony.

Also present were PPWE chairman Wee Ah Siew and organising chairperson Irene Lue.
