KUCHING (Aug 21): Jonah Chang Rigan added a second 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) gold medal to his collection in the men’s discus throw event this morning with a personal best of 46.16 metres.
Negeri Sembilan’s Riess William Ling Eng Meng won the silver, while the bronze went to Rizad Azri Che Radzi from Perlis.
Despite the rainy conditions, Jonah managed to focus solely on his technique and rhythm in the field.
“Actually, many are scared and nervous to compete in the rain because they are afraid of the slippery conditions and they might fall.
“But you cannot think like that. Just focus on your technique and your rhythm. Then, the discus will stay in your hand and not be slippery,” he shared with reporters after his win at the Sarawak Stadium.
The 21-year-old from Sarikei revealed he has studied how the world’s best athletes cope with adverse weather conditions when competing.
He said having the right mindset was essential to achieve his best performance.
Jonah also thanked the medical support team for helping to relieve the pain in his shoulder, particularly after winning the gold medal in the shot put yesterday with a new games record of 17.66 metres.
The strongman expects a “big fight” on Friday in the hammer throw event, where he will again attempt to break his personal best record.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah presented the medals.
