KUCHING (Sept 16): The Sarawak swim team continues its dominance at the Majlis Sukan Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) 2024 Aquatics event held at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, maintaining its lead in the medal tally.
On the second day of the competition, the team added five gold, two silver, and five bronze medals to their collection, bringing their total to an impressive 12 gold, six silver, and nine bronze medals.
Trailing closely behind, the Kuala Lumpur team has secured 11 gold, four silver, and four bronze medals, placing them in second position. Selangor holds third place with eight gold, 14 silver, and seven bronze medals, while Melaka follows in fourth with seven gold, three silver, and one bronze.
Sarawak’s Chereen Ngo Yirui made waves by setting a new record in the women’s 1500m open category with a time of 18:38.67, erasing the previous record of 18:41.10 set by Khew Zi Xian of Selangor in 2023.
Chereen also secured a silver medal in the 200m backstroke for women 15 and under category, while teammate Shanise Jauwa Joseline Adong contributed a bronze in the same event.
In another thrilling race, Sheamus Chew Heng Yi broke the record in the boys 12 and under 100m butterfly with a time of 1:02.80, surpassing the previous record of 1:04.86 set by Saw Huai Chng in 2023.
Sarawak continued to shine in other events. Dylan Leong Yi Quan claimed gold in the boys’ 200m backstroke for the 15 and under category.
In the women’s 18-and-under 100m breaststroke, Magdalene Lau struck gold, with fellow Sarawakian Kueh Shir Le securing bronze.
In the men’s 18-and-under category of the same event, Hector Ho Rze Jun contributed a silver medal.
Louis Tie Xun Rui won bronze in the 100m breaststroke for boys 12 and under, while in the same event for boys 15 and under, Seau Zhi Ping earned a bronze.
In the women’s 12 and under 100m butterfly event, Elisha Lee added to Sarawak’s tally with a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Sarawak’s success extended to the relay events, as the 4x50m medley relay mixed team of Liysha Liung Chen Celestine, Louis Tie, Sheamus, and Elisha powered through to win gold.
