KUCHING, May 29: Sarawak is set to strengthen its energy security and grid stability through the implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) expected to open tenders for the projects soon, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah said the move is crucial as the increasing use of solar and renewable energy could threaten grid stability without proper energy storage systems in place.
“Solar energy depends on sunlight. When there is strong sunlight, it can supply electricity for up to four hours. During that period, our grid may become unstable.
“However, electricity demand remains high, and this could threaten the grid, potentially causing power trips and other disruptions. To stabilise the system, we need battery storage.
“Once batteries are integrated, they can supply electricity in a more stable manner based on consumption needs, ensuring the grid remains secure and stable,” he told reporters after officiating the Korban meat distribution programme in conjunction with the Aidiladha celebration at Surau Darul Ehsan in Kampung Sinjan today.
Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said all Large Scale Solar (LSS) projects tendered by the federal government now include battery systems as part of the package.
He revealed that BESS projects are also being planned in Sabah and along the East Coast near the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) area.
“In Sarawak, I have been informed that Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) will also open tenders for BESS supply,” he added.
He further explained the recently launched BESS Santong project in Dungun, Terengganu is expected to supply electricity to about 40,000 households.
“As for other locations, tenders are currently being opened. It will depend on the tender process and the selected locations by successful bidders. There are several potential locations, including the western and southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fadillah also extended his wishes in conjunction with National Journalists’ Day, calling on media practitioners to continue delivering accurate and truthful news while fostering unity among Malaysians. — DayakDaily
