KUCHING, May 19: The Sarawak Government aims to produce 860,000 porkers annually, valued at RM1.29 billion through the three pig farming areas.

This follows the government’s initiative to significantly expand its pig farming sector by 2030.

“We are aiming for a total capacity of 500,000 Standing Pig Population (SPP) through the full commissioning of the Pasir Puteh and Selangau Pig Farming Areas (PFA), alongside Modern Pig Farm (MPF) in Ensengei.

“These farms are targeted to produce 860,000 porkers annually, valued at RM1.29 billion. This will position Sarawak as a major regional exporter, driving the need for enhanced downstream processing for both domestic and international markets,” said Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi while delivering his ministerial winding up speech at Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.

To reduce livestock food trade deficit, he said the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak has implemented various programmes to increase livestock self-sufficiency and has initiated bilateral engagements with Kalimantan to explore pig export opportunities.

As Sarawak remains free from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) without vaccination, Dr Rundi who is also Kemena assembly (GPS-PBB) added that the government will continue supporting private sector participation in the swine industry while maintaining strict disease prevention measures to preserve this status.

In response to Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira (GPS-PRS) queries last week, Dr Rundi said Selangau Pig Farming Area is operated by a private company but monitored by DVS.

The 233-hectare project shall be developed in phases. To-date, a total of 10 hectares of land has been cleared and basic infrastructures such as office and administrative area, fencing, access road construction and core utility are currently being carried out and expected to be completed in 2028, said Dr Rundi.

He added that the project is designed to transform traditional farming into a technology driven export industry.

“The PFA Selangau development will provide employment and various business opportunities to the local community,” said Dr Rundi. —DayakDaily
